I’m so excited–I just got out of the shower, using my brand new, 15-Stage, Vitamin-C Shower Filter, with a new, high pressure, self-cleaning, anti-microbial shower head attachment!
Getting a shower filter is something that I have thought about doing for years, and only recently within the last few months began researching. Most of us know that we should be drinking filtered water to avoid health-related risks due to build-up of toxins from the water supply. But because of the porosity of our skin, it is also highly absorbent, and toxins in your shower water can easily be absorbed into the body.
Municipal water (tap water) is treated with chlorine, (amongst many other unsavory chemicals,) which, when heated up—such as in a relaxing, hot shower—can turn into chlorine gas. This chemical combination has been shown to induce hormone disruption, as well as reproductive and neurotoxic adverse effects. 1 “Research presented at the American Chemical Society in 1986 demonstrated that showering leads to greater exposure to toxic chemicals in tap water than drinking the water does.” 2 Some parts of the body are also more absorbent than others, including the face, scalp, and underarms, all of which are closest to the shower head (i.e. the chlorine gas.) 3
Not only does unfiltered shower water cause some very serious, potential health risks, it can also cause some superficial issues, such as dry, itchy skin, clogged pores, acne, brittle hair, and even hair loss!!! 4 So, when I began researching shower filtration options, I was extra happy to find that saving the day was so much more affordable than I had anticipated. And while I was at it, I did some research on options for increasing the water pressure, too.
We didn’t have particularly low water pressure before either, however, I have a lot of hair, and washing and conditioning with my raw, plant-based, chemical-free, gluten-free, vegan shampoo and conditioner 5, often left me exhausted before I even got around to scrubbing my body. And, although we do not have particularly hard water, (our water tends to be softer than say the water out on the West Coast, or out in the desert,) dry skin has frequently been a frustration in our house.
With my new shower set up, I was able to shower and take care of ALL the things, in 1/4 the time! And I’m not just talking about a “test-shower”… this was hardcore scrubbing, from head down to in-between the toes, full-on shampooing and conditioning, and even shaving…like, “I’m about to head out on a 10-day hike in the wilderness, off the grid, Last-Supper, kind of Shower.” It was serious business in there…and it took me 1/4 of the time it normally would have!!! (I know this to be true: I brought in the egg timer.)
My skin feels amazing right now, but I noticed that even while I was in the shower, my skin felt so much softer and moisturized! I swear, I think I could have shaved my entire body without using any soap—if I had really wanted to.
Ultimately, I chose a 15-Stage Shower Filter based on my own personal needs: I wanted a multi-stage shower filter that included Vitamin-C filtering, because Vitamin-C neutralizes the chlorine and chloramine found in showers. The other filtering stages include carbon filtering; KDF55 filtering; microporous-, magnetic energy-, and geranium-ceramic ball filtering; and calcium sulfite filtering stages (just to name a few,) which are most beneficial for removing sediments, impurities and heavy metals (lead, mercury, nickel, chromium), bacteria, pesticides, (and all of the other unpleasant toxins that generally pollute our water supply,) as well as for inhibiting the growth of scale, algae, fungi, and mold. (Eeeeew, gross, right?)
I did it all for about $50.00, all by myself, no tools required, in about 20 minutes. Bam. Check out my handiwork:
This included installing the high pressure shower head attachment, the new shower filter, and the filter cartridge. The filter cartridge will only need to be replaced about every 6 months at most (maybe even less often for our house,) and for $15.00 per cartridge, this seems like a no-brainer to me…
The result: I used significantly less water with the increased water pressure shower head, because I hardly had to turn the water on at all to get a really heavy water flow. I was also able to get “ALL the things” done in much less time, which not only saved water, but seriously saved my energy as well! (I am a little OCD about hygiene.) The soap washed off my body instantly, which also saved me time, water, and energy. My skin and hair are already significantly softer, and I probably have a few more brain cells without the added chlorine gas spraying in my face, but I don’t have any lab results to prove this. One thing is for sure, my time is precious, and I have a lot more of it now outside of my shower, than I did before! I am a very happy *clean!* girl.
